Question 1

When should I start preparing, and what does a realistic timeline look like?

Accepted Answer

Start 12 to 14 months before your intended intake. Research and test preparation come first (12 to 14 months out), then the GRE/GMAT and IELTS/TOEFL, document attestation (if your country requires it), WES evaluation and SOP drafting (9 to 11 months out). Applications and recommendation letters follow at 6 to 8 months, scholarships and financial planning at 3 to 5 months, and the F-1 visa, housing and travel in the last 1 to 2 months. Delays almost always come from steps that depend on someone else, such as your university, a testing center, an evaluator or the embassy, so build buffer time into every stage.

Question 2

Which intakes exist, and when are the deadlines?

Accepted Answer

Most US master's programs start in the fall (August or September), and some also admit for spring. Deadlines for fall admission typically fall between December and March. Many programs, including most public health programs, review applications on a rolling basis, so earlier applicants often get earlier decisions and better odds at funding.

Question 3

How many universities should I apply to?

Accepted Answer

There is no fixed number, but a balanced list matters more than a long one. Aim for a few ambitious reach schools, several solid matches where your profile is clearly competitive, and at least one or two safer options. Remember that every application carries fees and effort, so each school on the list should be one you would genuinely attend.

Question 4

Should I choose a program for its brand name or its fit?

Accepted Answer

Fit usually wins. A strong, well-regarded program in your specific field will normally serve your career better than a famous university name attached to a generic degree. Also look at funding culture (some departments are consistently generous, others offer almost nothing), faculty and research alignment, class size, and the cost of living in the city.

Question 5

Do I need work experience to apply for a master's?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the program. Many master's programs accept students straight out of undergrad, while others, especially MBA and some policy or health management programs, prefer or require a couple of years of relevant experience. Check each program's stated preference rather than assuming a blanket rule.

Question 6

Should I choose a thesis or a non-thesis track?

Accepted Answer

If you are considering a PhD later, a thesis track often makes more sense, since it gives you research experience and a faculty relationship that strengthens future doctoral applications. A coursework-only track can be faster and more practical if your goal is to move straight into industry. Not every program offers both options, so check what is available.

Question 7

Does it matter whether a university uses semesters or quarters?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Most US universities run on semesters, but a handful operate on quarters, which means a faster pace and more frequent exams. Neither is better, but the difference affects workload and how quickly you need to adjust, so it is worth knowing before you commit.

Question 8

I come from a medical, dental, pharmacy or engineering background. Is there anything special for me?

Accepted Answer

Check whether programs offer advanced standing, accelerated credit or dedicated application pathways for professional degrees. Also look for scholarships built around your profile. They are often less competitive than general pools simply because fewer people search for them.

Question 9

Can I apply to multiple intakes at the same university?

Accepted Answer

Usually not within the same cycle, but if you are not admitted for one intake, you can typically reapply for a later one, sometimes with a reduced or waived fee.

Question 10

Can I transfer universities after starting my program?

Accepted Answer

It is possible but adds complexity, since credits do not always transfer fully and your visa documentation needs to be reissued by the new school. A transfer also involves a SEVIS transfer, where your new school requests that your record be released by the old one on a specific date, so timing matters with both institutions. It is far better to choose carefully upfront than to plan on transferring later.

Question 11

What GPA do I need to be competitive?

Accepted Answer

There is no universal cutoff, since it varies by program and field, but most competitive applicants fall above 3.0 on a converted 4.0 scale. A lower GPA is not automatically disqualifying if the rest of your profile (research, work experience, strong SOP) is solid. Your WES evaluation will reflect your converted GPA regardless of how your home university grades.

Question 12

I have a gap year or academic backlog. Will this hurt my application?

Accepted Answer

Gaps and backlogs are common and rarely disqualifying on their own. What matters is how you explain them. If your SOP or an optional addendum briefly and honestly addresses the gap, admissions committees generally read it as context, not a red flag.

Question 13

Will online coursework or a degree from a newer university in my country be accepted?

Accepted Answer

As long as your institution and degree are recognized by the education authority in your country, this generally is not an issue. Your credential evaluation translates your degree into its accepted US equivalent, regardless of how established the institution is internationally.

Question 14

I was rejected before. Should I reapply?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Reapplication is common and not viewed negatively. Use the time between cycles to strengthen whatever was weakest the first time, whether that is test scores, work experience, or a stronger SOP.

Question 15

What if I'm put on a waitlist?

Accepted Answer

Waitlists are common and do not mean rejection. Some programs allow you to submit an additional note reaffirming your interest or sharing updates (a new publication, a promotion, an improved test score). Check whether the specific program welcomes this before sending anything unsolicited.

Question 16

Does having a degree from a big-name university matter more than my grades?

Accepted Answer

Not on its own. Admissions committees look at the whole profile: grades, research or work experience, recommendations and how clearly your SOP explains your goals. A strong record from a lesser-known institution, properly evaluated, can compete well.

Question 17

Can I apply without taking the GRE or GMAT?

Accepted Answer

Many programs have gone fully test-optional or offer waivers for applicants with strong academic records, relevant experience, or an existing graduate degree. If a waiver is mentioned anywhere on a program's site, request it, since it costs nothing to ask. Always confirm this directly on the program's admissions page rather than assuming.

Question 18

Should I take the IELTS or the TOEFL?

Accepted Answer

Both are broadly accepted. TOEFL is fully computer-based and, after its 2026 redesign, noticeably shorter. IELTS offers a face-to-face speaking component and, at many centers, a choice between paper-based and computer-based formats. Take a free practice test for both before committing, since students often score meaningfully better on one simply because the structure suits them.

Question 19

What if I need to retake a test?

Accepted Answer

Most testing bodies allow retakes after a waiting period, and schools typically consider your highest score, or in some cases the most recent one. Build a possible retake into your schedule early rather than deciding after the fact that you need one.

Question 20

Can I convert my own GPA to the 4.0 scale?

Accepted Answer

Do not try to estimate it manually for application purposes. Universities in many countries grade on a percentage or another scale, and a credential evaluation exists precisely to do this conversion. Most programs expect that official conversion rather than your own calculation.

Question 21

Do I need to get my documents attested, and when should I start?

Accepted Answer

Some US universities, and sometimes the visa process, expect your degree and transcripts to be attested or authenticated by your country's education authority or ministry (for example, HEC in Pakistan). Requirements differ by country, so check with your target programs. Start early, since processing can take several weeks and often gets slower during peak application season.

Question 22

What is a WES evaluation, and is it mandatory?

Accepted Answer

Many US graduate programs require a foreign credential evaluation to convert your degree and grades into their US equivalent. WES (World Education Services) is the most widely accepted evaluator and the default choice if a program does not specify otherwise. Graduate applicants typically need a Course-by-Course evaluation, which lists every course with its US credit and grade equivalent, plus a GPA on the 4.0 scale. Your university must send official transcripts directly to WES, not through you, so initiate the request well in advance.

Question 23

Can I use an evaluator other than WES?

Accepted Answer

Often yes. A number of universities also accept ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators) and other members of NACES, such as SpanTran, Josef Silny or Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute. Some programs name the evaluators they accept, and a few accept any NACES member, so check your program's requirements and compare turnaround times and fees.

Question 24

Do I need certified translations of my documents?

Accepted Answer

If any academic documents are not in English, they typically need a certified translation alongside the original. Some evaluators and universities have specific rules about who may perform it (your institution directly or an authorized third party), so check before assuming a translation will be accepted.

Question 25

Which documents might need to be notarized?

Accepted Answer

Financial sponsorship letters and affidavits of support are the usual ones. Notaries in many countries are familiar with this process for study-abroad purposes, but confirm the exact format your university or the visa process expects.

Question 26

What is SOPHAS, and do I need it?

Accepted Answer

SOPHAS is the centralized application service used by public health programs. You submit transcripts, recommendations and your SOP once, and the platform distributes them to each selected program. It also runs its own fee assistance program, so apply for that before submitting.

Question 27

How should I start my Statement of Purpose?

Accepted Answer

Skip the childhood-inspiration opening. It is the most overused start in SOPs and blends in rather than standing out. Open with something concrete: a project, a problem, or a specific moment that shaped your direction. A strong SOP shows what pulled you toward the field, what you have already done to prepare, and why this particular program is right for you.

Question 28

Should I name specific professors and courses in my SOP?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Naming actual faculty, courses or program features relevant to your goals is the detail most applicants skip, and it reads as genuine research rather than a copy-paste job.

Question 29

How do I handle optional or supplemental essays?

Accepted Answer

Treat each one (a diversity statement, a "why this school" essay, a short-answer supplement) as a separate assignment, not a condensed repeat of your main SOP. Each should add something new rather than restate what is already covered elsewhere in your application.

Question 30

Should I cold-email professors before applying?

Accepted Answer

For research-heavy programs, particularly those with a thesis track, a brief and specific email about why a professor's work interests you can be worthwhile. Do not expect a guaranteed reply. It is a bonus step, not a required one, so do not let it delay your actual application.

Question 31

Who should write my recommendation letters, and how many do I need?

Accepted Answer

Choose people who can speak specifically about your work, not someone senior who barely remembers your name. Most programs want two to three letters, and a mix of academic and professional recommenders, where relevant, paints a fuller picture than three letters saying similar things.

Question 32

How early should I ask my recommenders?

Accepted Answer

At least four to six weeks before your earliest deadline. Make it easy for them by sharing your resume, SOP draft and a reminder of specific projects or interactions you shared.

Question 33

Can my recommendation letters be in my native language, or do they need to be in English?

Accepted Answer

Letters should be submitted in English. If a recommender is more comfortable writing in another language, it is common practice to have the letter translated, though most academics and professionals who write recommendation letters for US applications are used to doing so in English directly.

Question 34

I graduated years ago. Who can I ask for a recommendation?

Accepted Answer

Most programs understand that academic recommenders are not always realistic. A mix of professional supervisors and, if possible, one academic reference who still remembers your coursework is usually acceptable. Some programs still expect at least one academic letter, so check each requirement.

Question 35

What should an academic CV look like?

Accepted Answer

Graduate programs usually expect a CV rather than a short resume. Include education, research experience, publications or presentations, relevant work experience, honors and awards, and field-relevant skills. Keep every line specific: "Analyzed data from a 500-person cohort and co-authored a resulting paper" tells a reviewer far more than "assisted with research."

Question 36

Does my LinkedIn profile matter?

Accepted Answer

It is not formally part of most applications, but admissions committees occasionally look applicants up, and employers and connections you make during your program certainly will. Keep it current and consistent with your CV well before you start applying.

Question 37

How much does the application process cost before I even get admitted?

Accepted Answer

Application fees, test fees and credential evaluation costs add up quickly. Request application fee waivers before submitting, since most schools will not refund fees afterward. Many universities offer need-based waivers, and platforms like SOPHAS run their own fee assistance programs.

Question 38

Do I need to apply separately for scholarships?

Accepted Answer

Often not. Your admission application frequently doubles as your scholarship application automatically. University-based scholarships are usually far more accessible than high-profile global ones, so do not overlook them in favor of only chasing famous names.

Question 39

Should I apply for Fulbright or other external scholarships?

Accepted Answer

They are worth researching early. Government and foundation scholarships such as Fulbright typically run on separate, earlier deadlines than university applications.

Question 40

What if scholarships do not cover everything?

Accepted Answer

International student loan providers exist specifically for applicants without a US cosigner. Research the terms carefully and compare more than one option before committing.

Question 41

How do assistantships work, and how do I get one?

Accepted Answer

Research and teaching assistantships often come with a partial or full tuition waiver plus a stipend. Applying is usually a separate step from admission. Some departments ask you to opt in during the application, while others open assistantship applications only after decisions go out, often with a short deadline. Once admitted, email the graduate coordinator to ask whether assistantships are available, how to apply and when the deadline is, since positions are frequently awarded first-come to admitted students who ask.

Question 42

How much money do I need to show for the visa?

Accepted Answer

You generally need to demonstrate funds covering at least your first year of tuition and living expenses, through bank statements, a scholarship award letter, a loan approval, or a sponsor's financial documents. Exact expectations vary by consular officer discretion, so clear, well-organized documentation matters more than hitting an exact number.

Question 43

Can a family member sponsor me financially?

Accepted Answer

Yes, this is common. You will typically need an affidavit of support along with the sponsor's bank statements or income documents showing they can realistically support your costs.

Question 44

Is there a limit on how much money I can carry or transfer out of my country?

Accepted Answer

Many countries have foreign exchange rules, usually set by the central bank, that apply to international remittances for education. Banks handling education-related transfers are familiar with this process, so discuss specifics directly with your bank once you have your I-20 and a clear cost estimate.

Question 45

How do I pay my tuition once I'm admitted?

Accepted Answer

Most universities accept international wire transfers, and many also partner with specialized education payment platforms that offer better exchange rates than a standard bank transfer. Compare a couple of options before sending a large payment.

Question 46

How much does health insurance cost?

Accepted Answer

Mandatory university-sponsored plans typically run somewhere between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, though it varies significantly by university and plan tier, and some schools bill it per semester. It is usually added automatically to your tuition bill, so include it in your total cost estimate from the start. Coverage for an F-2 dependent is typically a separate added cost.

Question 47

How do I compare offers from different universities?

Accepted Answer

Compare net cost, not sticker price: tuition minus any scholarship, waiver or stipend, plus a realistic cost of living for that city. Ask whether funding is guaranteed for the full program or only the first year, and what you must do to keep it. A higher-ranked program with no funding can cost more out of pocket than a solid program with a partial waiver.

Question 48

How long do I have to accept an offer, and what about the other schools?

Accepted Answer

Graduate programs do not coordinate around a single reply date. Each sets its own deposit deadline, often two to six weeks after admission, so confirm each offer's deadline directly. Once you commit and pay a deposit, formally notify the programs you are declining so they can offer your spot to someone on their waitlist.

Question 49

Can I get a scholarship if I'm applying with a spouse or family?

Accepted Answer

Scholarship eligibility is almost always based on your individual academic profile, not your family situation. However, if you plan to bring dependents, factor their visa costs and living expenses into your overall budget separately, since dependent visas do not come with their own funding.

Question 50

What else should my monthly budget include?

Accepted Answer

Tuition is only one line item. Budget for housing, health insurance, food, local transportation, books and supplies, a phone plan and a buffer for surprises. Costs vary enormously by city: a coastal metropolis will cost dramatically more than a smaller Midwestern or Southern college town, even if tuition is similar.

Question 51

What are the steps of the F-1 visa process?

Accepted Answer

In order: receive your I-20 from the university (it contains your SEVIS ID), pay the SEVIS fee, complete the online DS-160 form, pay the visa fee and schedule your interview, gather your documents, and attend the interview. Keep the DS-160 confirmation page, as you will need it at the interview.

Question 52

Where is the visa interview held?

Accepted Answer

At the US Embassy or a US Consulate, usually in your home country, booked through the official appointment portal. Which locations handle student visas differs by country, so check the official US government visa website for yours.

Question 53

Which documents should I bring to the interview?

Accepted Answer

Typically your passport, I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS and visa fee receipts, attested academic documents (if your country requires attestation), financial evidence covering at least your first year (bank statements or a sponsor or loan letter), admission and scholarship letters, and a visa-compliant photo.

Question 54

What does the visa officer want to hear?

Accepted Answer

Be ready to explain your program choice, your academic and financial background, and your plans after your studies, including your ties to your home country, clearly and honestly. Specific, concise answers work better than rehearsed speeches.

Question 55

My visa was refused under Section 221(g). Is that the end?

Accepted Answer

No. A 221(g) refusal is not a denial. It means the officer needs more documentation or administrative processing before deciding, and most of these eventually clear.

Question 56

I was denied under Section 214(b). Can I reapply?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A 214(b) denial means the officer was not convinced you demonstrated sufficient ties to your home country or met the visa's requirements at that interview. There is no formal waiting period, but reapplying with the same documentation rarely changes the outcome. Strengthen your evidence of ties to your home country (family, property, a job offer to return to) and your financial documentation, and answer more clearly the second time.

Question 57

What happens if my visa is delayed or flagged for administrative processing?

Accepted Answer

This happens occasionally and is not necessarily a rejection. It often just means additional review time. If it happens close to your program start date, contact your university's international student office immediately, since many have experience helping students request deferred enrollment.

Question 58

Can I defer my enrollment if the visa is delayed?

Accepted Answer

Most universities allow deferral to the next intake rather than losing your admission. Your school typically issues a new I-20 with an updated start date and updates your SEVIS record, so you rarely need to restart the process from scratch, though you may need a new visa interview if your existing visa was tied to the original start date.

Question 59

Can my spouse or children come with me?

Accepted Answer

Yes, through an F-2 dependent visa. However, F-2 dependents are not permitted to work under any circumstances, and school-aged F-2 children can generally attend K-12 school, though university study has separate restrictions.

Question 60

Do I need travel or health insurance before I arrive, or can I get it after?

Accepted Answer

Most universities require you to enroll in a health insurance plan as part of registration, often billed automatically with tuition. Short-term travel insurance for the flight and first few days is not mandatory everywhere, but it is a reasonable precaution.

Question 61

How early should I book my flight relative to my visa interview?

Accepted Answer

Avoid booking a non-refundable flight before your visa is approved. Most students book travel once the visa is stamped, allowing a few days of buffer before the program's official start date.

Question 62

What GPA do I need to stay in good standing?

Accepted Answer

Most master's programs require a minimum cumulative GPA, commonly around 3.0 on the 4.0 scale. This is set by the individual program or graduate school, not immigration rules, so check your program handbook rather than assuming a standard number.

Question 63

What happens if I'm placed on academic probation?

Accepted Answer

Falling below the minimum GPA typically triggers a probation period, usually one semester, to bring your GPA back up. Do not wait for a formal notice if a semester has gone badly. Talk to your advisor early.

Question 64

Does academic trouble affect my visa?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Academic dismissal for failing to meet GPA requirements ends your eligibility to maintain F-1 status, since your SEVIS record is tied to active enrollment in good standing. If you are placed on probation, loop in your international student advisor alongside your academic advisor.
